Elizabeth Van Doren Gray was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers on October 19, 2002 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. A partner of Sowell Gray Stepp & Laffitte, LLC, Gray is the Immediate Past President of the South Carolina Bar and the first female attorney from South Carolina to be inducted as a Fellow of the College. Founded in 1950, the College is limited to less than 1% of the total lawyer population of each state and widely considered to be the premier professional organization in America. Fellowship in the College is extended by invitation to those experienced trial lawyers who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality. Lawyers must have a minimum of 15 years trial experience before they can be considered for Fellowship. There are currently approximately 5,000 Fellows across the U. S. and Canada. Membership is awarded based on extremely high standards: trial lawyers who are unquestionably and eminently qualified, who are outstanding and considered the best in their states, who exhibit high ethical and moral standards and excellent character, and who are actively engaged in trial work as their principal activity. Gray received her Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1976.
